Panaji: The Congress party, on Thursday, said the Goa electricity department is deliberately delaying monthly electricity meter readings due to which power consumers in the state, who were supposed to be charged at a lower slab rate, are being charged a a higher rate.The electricity department charges domestic customers Rs 1.4 per unit if upto 100 units of power are consumed. This is a huge loot by the department and is a malpractice perpetrated intentionally to cheat and rob the public,” Bhike alleged.The state Congress unit has written to chief minister Manohar Parrikar and the chief electrical engineer Neelakanta Reddy demanding a stop to this malpractice. Every fresh meter reading should be taken on the bill date and there should not be any difference in the issue date and bill date,” Goa pradesh Congress committee president for north Goa Vijay Bhike said.Bhike and his colleague Nikhil Narvekar claimed that meter readers deliberately delay the meter reading so that the number of units consumed falls in the 101 to 200 category.The party presented an electricity bill which shows the bill date as June 2 but the meter reading date as June 8.“Every consumer ends up paying extra to the department against their monthly units consumed.
