Getting rid of Virat Kohli early would have been on top of Australia’s strategy in the first Test against India at the Adelaide Oval. And that’s how it went for the home side. In 11th over of India’s first innings, fast-bowler Pat Cummins removed the Indian wicket. Kohli went for a drive on a delivery which was pitched outside the off-stump. Instead of middling it, Kohli edged it towards the gully region and Khawaja jumped to his left and plucked the ball one-handed. At Kohli’s fall, India’s score read 19 for three.
Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first. India included Rohit Sharma at number six instead of Hanuma Vihari. The visitors received the first blow in the second over when Josh Hazlewood had KL Rahul caught at the third slip. Then few overs later, Mitchell Starc struck to remove another opener Murali Vijay, who was caught behind, The similarity between Rahul, Vijay, and Kohli’s wicket was that all of them went for a drive which never came off.
This is the first of the four-match Test series between India and Australia. The two teams competed in the three-match T20 International series prior to the Tests, which was shared one each.
