Every now and then we come across the difficult and emotional feeling of saying goodbye to some of our most cherished heroes in sports. These athletes have given decades in service to their beloved countries and clubs and have won hearts in their endeavor to become world stars.

AS Roma, one of Italy’s premier clubs in the Serie A has been home to a few iconic football players. The first name that comes to the mind is, of course, Francesco Totti. Not far behind is another legend of the club who has finally taken the decision of putting up his boots – Daniele De Rossi.

The Italian has been playing for Roma ever since he joined as a youth player in 2001. 18 years after dedicating his life for his hometown side, the World Cup winner will be playing his last game of the season very soon, and the emotional send-off following Totti’s exit just doesn’t get easier with this one.

While the club and fans get ready to bid adieu to the talented player, here are a few facts that you should know about De Rossi.

Daniele De Rossi was born in Rome, into a family rich in football genes. His father Alberto was a former Roma player and Roma’s Primavera (youth sector) coach. With genes that stick to the club so deep, Rossi was always destined to make his way to the club that was so close to him, even before he became one of its finest talents.

Tackle – machine

Fans of the Italian player will know that Rossi was known for his rough tackles on players. All through his career, he is known to have tackled opponents in fearlessness. The Roma legend has picked up a lot of red cards during his tenure with club and country. He told Il Calciatore in 2018, “I’ve had quite a few red cards in my career and I must admit I pretty much always deserved them.”

Occasional Fair play

Even though his rough tackling and dominating presence was well known, the player had his moments of fair play. In 2006, he was praised by referee Mauro Bergonzi, after he confessed to him that he had used his hand in a goal he had scored in the game. This talks a lot of the character he is despite his prominent and sometimes over ecstatic passion for the game.

English connection

Rossi has been attracted to English ladies all his life and his marriages are proof. Rossi married Tamara Pisnoli, Italo-British actress, in 2006. The couple had a daughter together on June 16, 2005, one of two reasons Rossi wears the 16 number jersey for the club. The other reason is that his idol, Roy Keane wore the same number.

Rossi and Tamara split in 2009, and two years later he met Sarah Felberbaum, an English-born Italian born actress, and model. They tied the knot in 2015 and have a daughter and a son together.

‘Capitan Futuro’

While another Roma legend Francesco Totti captained the club and announced his retirement, the favourite by the players to take on the mantle was Rossi. For this teammates and Roma fans nicknamed him ‘Capitan Futuro’ (Future Captain). Rossi went on to captain the side and will be doing so until the end of his last season with the club.
