When it rained in Mumbai!
Monday night saw the skies open up as thunder roared, lightning crackled and the first heavy showers of rain hit the city. After weeks and months of sweltering in the heat, with the earth parched, animals thirsty and humans suffering from the hot weather, the rain that came down was very welcome indeed! In the past while Indian poets may have sung of the arrival of the first rains, within minutes Twitter and Facebook were chattering with varying reactions to the arrival of the monsoon. Posted Priti, a twitterati: “Mumbai welcoming the rain gods…and how!!” Another, Shruti, posted: “What’s with this sound and light show? The rains can’t come silently can they? What a spectacular entry!!” A citizen, Snehal wrote: “This is terrific! What a show!” While Bindas Ladki posted an image of pakoras with green chillies and cutting chai, Karan wrote: “Finally! Stuck at Malad station for last 15 minutes!”. Actor Randeep Hooda posted: “What a relief from the relentless”. Comedian Vir Das, who must have been about to retire for the night, wrote: “Baarish vala neend (sleep in the rainy season) = best.” Many citizens posted videos of the furious lightning and thunder that shook the city from their apartment buildings while others recorded videos of their children going out to soak in the first showers. There were other reactions too, such as from Gabbar who humorously posted: “Mumbai rains are like an arranged marriage, everyone celebrates on the first day, and then...” Ha ha!
