Universiade 2019 | Dutee Chand bags women’s 100m gold

Athlete Dutee Chand has clinched the gold medal in women’s 100m race at the ongoing Summer Universiade in Napoli, Italy. The Indian sprinter clocked 11.32 seconds in the final to finish at the top of the 100m event at the 30th edition of the Summer University Games 2019 on Tuesday.

The national record holder athlete from India was in a great form when she started the race. She maintained the lead from the beginning till the end in the final to bag the first position in the 100m event for the women in Napoli. After clocking 11.41 seconds in the semi-final heats, the Odisha athlete bettered her performance in the final and recorded 11.32 seconds.

This is the first gold medal for India in the ongoing edition and Chand was also the first player to make it to the final of the 100m event for the first time in the history of the Games as well.

“With years of hardwork and your blessings, I have yet again broken the record by winning the Gold in 100m dash in 11.32 seconds at The World University Games, Napoli. In the pictures, are the winners too, with a heart of Gold from Germany and Sweden,” tweeted Chand.

In the shooting event on Tuesday, Achal Prathap Singh Grewal and P. Shri Nivetha missed out on a bronze medal in the air pistol mixed team event. The Indian duo finished fourth after shooting 566 and 569 in the two rounds of qualification events. They finally managed only 12 in the final and fell short from Italy’s 16. Chinese Taipei and Korea ended at the first and second positions respectively.
