Education minister commends education officers, coaches
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister with responsibility for Education, Youth and Information, Karl Samuda has commended the work being done in schools by the ministry's education officers, numeracy and literacy teams as well as the student support team.
“They have been working hard with principals and school boards to raise the standard of schools. Armed with data from the National Education Inspectorate and student assessments, they have been able to target specific areas of weakness and I am pleased with the results we are seeing,” Samuda said.
The education ministry said the officers were also deployed to primary and high schools identified as needing assistance in specific subject areas following the release of the results of the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) in June this year. Math coaches have been deployed to 239 primary schools, while the National Literacy Team has been providing direct support to 120 of the primary schools identified as being in need of critical help in Language Arts.
According to the ministry, all primary schools will receive specialised intervention from science officers, however 288 schools have been identified as critical and will receive individual targeted support and group support.
The ministry noted that science officers have also been deployed to 124 high schools and a number of schools are also receiving support to improve performance in social studies.
“Once deployed to schools, the education officers and coaches support class teachers through the use of demonstration lessons, co-planning, co-teaching, conferencing as well as professional development sessions targeting areas of weaknesses.
“Coaches and education officers also assess contact hours for each subjects, audit the teaching resources available and make recommendations for improvement,” the ministry said.
It added that students in the targeted schools have been receiving support through student camps, practice sessions, tutorials and pull-out sessions.
“As a ministry, we are working to ensure that all our schools are model schools, providing an equal chance of academic success for our students. We want to ensure that every child, regardless of where they hail from or the school they attend, is given a 21st century education. Our officers are at the forefront of that effort and they must be commended,” Samuda said.
