Saif Ali Khan has often been referred to as royalty and ‘Chhote Nawab’. His father Mansoor Ali Khan, who was the ninth Nawab of Pataudi, was also the former captain of the Indian cricket team. In 1971, however, he disowned his title (Pataudi) after the government abolished princely titles. The Pataudi Palace though has been associated with their family and we’ve often seen Saif along with his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan and son Taimur bring in their birthdays and spend quality time at the palace. But in a recent interview with a newspaper, Saif revealed how the Pataudi Palace was not inherited by him. He, in fact, had to buy it back using the money he earned doing Bollywood films.

A Heritage Hotel

Today, the Pataudi Palace is considered a prime property, valued at 800 crores and Saif and his family enjoy paying a visit to their royal abode, but this wasn’t the case always. The actor revealed that after his father passed away, the palace was leased to Neemrana group of hotels, and did not get passed down to him, a notion many have. They offered him to buy it back from them for a huge amount of money. And that’s exactly what Saif did. He bought the Pataudi Palace from the hotel chain with his own, hard-earned money, and today, the palace is a vacation home for him and his family.

A Makeover

The actor got architect Darshini Shah to refurbish the interiors of Pataudi Palace, and give it an understated and comfortable setting, a change from the opulent look it had earlier. Even so, it is still a palatial property spread across 10 acres of land, with 150 rooms.

Royal Location

Pataudi Palace has also been a shoot location for Hollywood and Bollywood films, including starring Julia Roberts, and starring Aamir Khan. It was also the venue for his son Taimur Ali Khan’s very first birthday celebration. If you are wondering where Pataudi Palace is, it is in Pataudi town of Gurgaon district in Haryana.

While the estate is commonly known as Pataudi Palace, it is also called Ibrahim Kothi, and was designed in a colonial mansion style. Architect Robert Tor Russell was assisted by Austrian architect Karl Molt von Heinz on the project in the early 1900s.

Pataudi Palace: A Touch of Royalty

Even though it is no longer a heritage hotel where you can stay, you can surely get a taste of Pataudi Palace’s royalty. Recently, Saif Ali Khan-backed brand House of Pataudi collaborated with online shopping portal Flipkart to offer a premium range of heritage furniture.

Offering wooden décor pieces and furniture perfect for your living room or study, the collection is aimed to add a touch of opulence to any home. Palace or no palace, you can surely add some royal charm to your space with these.

With enough media scrutiny on him and his family on a regular basis, the Pataudi Palace provides an escape from the norm and a chance to live like royalty in an actual palace.
